Gheralta & Tigray Churches

Rising dramatically from the sun-drenched plains of northern Ethiopia, the Gheralta Mountains represent one of the world's most spectacular geological and spiritual landscapes. Resembling the towering red sandstone buttes and mesas of the American Southwest, this rugged massif conceals more than 120 rock-hewn churches and monastic hermitages chiseled into vertical cliff faces, high cave mouths, and razor-sharp mountain ridges between the 5th and 14th centuries.

Abuna Yemata Guh: The Ultimate Aerial Pilgrimage

Perched 200 metres above a sheer vertical abyss on a freestanding sandstone pinnacle, the 6th-century rock church of Abuna Yemata Guh is famous worldwide as the most daringly situated place of worship on Earth. Reaching the sanctuary requires a thrilling barefoot ascent utilizing natural handholds and footholds worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims, supported by local village scouts. After navigating a narrow 50-centimetre ledge over a heart-stopping drop, visitors step through a tiny timber door into a candlelit sandstone dome covered in pristine 15th-century Byzantine-style frescoes depicting the Nine Saints, early apostles, and Old Testament prophets, painted with organic mineral pigments that remain vividly saturated today.

Maryam Korkor, Daniel Korkor & Debre Tsion

Further along the southern escarpment, a rewarding 1.5-hour mountain hike ascends through a steep canyon to Maryam Korkor, one of the largest and most architecturally imposing rock churches in Tigray. Excavated deep into the mountain summit with twelve massive stone pillars, domed arches, and exquisite geometric friezes, the church holds a revered collection of hand-illuminated parchment bibles. Just around the cliff edge, the tiny hermit chapel of Daniel Korkor sits atop a vertical precipice offering 360-degree panoramic vistas across the golden Hawzen plain. In the central valley near Dugem, the monastic complex of Debre Tsion (Abuna Abraham) features circular domed ceilings adorned with relief carvings and an extraordinary 15th-century ceremonial leather fan.
