Debere Libanos Monastery

Departure from Addis Ababa Your journey begins with an early morning departure from Addis Ababa at 7:30 AM. As you leave the bustling capital behind, travel north through the scenic Ethiopian highlands, passing traditional villages, rolling farmland, and dramatic mountain landscapes. The drive itself offers an excellent introduction to rural Ethiopian life and breathtaking views of the countryside. Debre Libanos Monastery Located approximately 110 km north of Addis Ababa, Debre Libanos is one of Ethiopia's most important religious and historical sites. Founded in the 13th century by the revered Ethiopian saint Tekle Haymanot, the monastery remains a major center of pilgrimage for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. The present church, built during the reign of Haile Selassie, stands prominently among the surrounding hills. While its exterior architecture is relatively simple, visitors are often captivated by the beautiful stained-glass windows that illuminate the interior with vibrant colors and depict significant biblical and Ethiopian religious scenes. One of the highlights of the visit is the monastery museum, considered among the finest church museums in Ethiopia. The collection includes ancient manuscripts, religious crosses, ceremonial crowns of former emperors and empresses, traditional musical instruments, Italian-era firearms, giant cooking vessels, and historic wooden shackles used centuries ago. Cave of Saint Tekle Haymanot A short walk uphill from the monastery leads to the sacred cave where Saint Tekle Haymanot is believed to have prayed and lived in meditation. This peaceful pilgrimage site offers visitors insight into Ethiopia's rich spiritual heritage. Nearby flows the monastery's famous holy water spring, which attracts pilgrims from across the country who believe in its healing properties. Portuguese Bridge & Blue Nile Gorge After exploring the monastery, continue to the historic Portuguese Bridge, located near the edge of the spectacular Blue Nile Gorge. Although the bridge's exact origins remain debated, it is widely known as the Portuguese Bridge and has become one of the most photographed landmarks in the region. The surrounding gorge offers stunning panoramic views, dramatic cliffs, and deep river valleys that have earned it the nickname "Ethiopia's Grand Canyon." This area is also renowned for its wildlife. Wildlife and Bird Watching The cliffs and grasslands surrounding the gorge provide excellent opportunities to observe the endemic Gelada, often called the Gelada Baboon. These fascinating primates are found only in the Ethiopian highlands and are famous for their social behavior and distinctive appearance. Bird enthusiasts will also enjoy spotting numerous Ethiopian bird species, including raptors soaring above the gorge and colorful highland birds inhabiting the surrounding forests and cliffs. Return to Addis Ababa After a memorable day exploring Ethiopia's religious heritage, dramatic landscapes, and unique wildlife, begin the return journey to Addis Ababa. Arrive back in the city in the late afternoon or early evening with unforgettable memories of one of Ethiopia's most rewarding day excursions.
